Cool Fall Friday

It’s fall. It’s time to chill a little bit. What better way to start a chill Fall Friday List than with one of Opeth‘s best songs, Harvest? You might find it odd, and I certainly do, that a death metal band like Opeth and a shock-rocker like Marilyn Manson could deliver the introduction to a chill fall list, but there it is.

I mean, Opeth is a death metal juggernaut. These guys are amazing musicians and masters of their genre. And, the thing is, I really don’t like death metal. At least most of the time. But Blackwater Park is a masterpiece, and even if you don’t appreciate guttural screaming (and I just don’t), the songcraft and the music on this album is something seriously special. Listen to it, and even if you aren’t a death metal junkie, you may actually like the album.

And, their song Harvest is just a great song. No guttural screams. Just great singing and great music.

And Marilyn Manson’s 2020 album We Are Chaos is a truly surprising record. Manson is a guilty pleasure for me. I discovered him way back when he put out his first album Portrait of an American Family, and I’ve never looked back. I love his shock-rock schtick. We Are Chaos is a cool and more-or-less introspective gem of a record by Manson, possibly his best record in my book, or his second-best, next to Mechanical Animals.

Anyway, these two guys kick off a great session of nice Fall Friday jams. Maybe you can build a fire — in your fireplace or your firepit. Pour an Old Fashioned. Or an apple juice. Kick back. Relax. Autumn is here. That means cooler weather, longer nights, and, of course, the comfort of the holidays, coming soon to a theater near you!
