These Guitars Sing!

How do you create a four-song playlist that’s over 45 minutes long AND freakin’ awesome? Well, my friend, you start with Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain!

These are all epic songs in which the guitar is the featured singer. And when I say, “singer”, well, yeah, these guitars sing.

There are some words here, but pretty much spoken, and pretty much just at the beginning.

Here’s Maggot Brain for you: “Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time / For y’all have knocked her up / I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe / I was not offended / For I knew I had to rise above it all / Or drown in my own shit / Come on Maggot Brain / Go on Maggot Brain”.

And what about Zappa’s Watermelon in Easter Hay? “…He has realized at last that imaginary guitar notes and imaginary vocals exist only in the mind
of the imaginer. And ultimately, who gives a fuck anyway? (laugh)…Excuse me…so who gives a fuck anyway? So he goes back to his ugly little room and quietly dreams his last imaginary guitar solo…”.

You might criticize me for putting Rodrigo y Gabriela’s cover of Echoes on this list. I mean the original song by Floyd has plenty of words, but R&G sing those lyrics without words, and they’re so damn good. So damn good, I tell you!

Four tunes. Weird words. Singing guitars. Epic play times. Sit back, relax, and just listen. What time is it? Is it 4:20?
