Now that I’m older, I realize that the music was speakingto me. It was saying, “Dude, you’re an outcast. You’re angry. You’re different. You’re WEIRD. Guess what, asshole? So are we! And we wear that shit!” Amen.

All of these songs challenge the idea of what it means to fit in, what a song should be, and they might even challenge, at least for some of us, the idea of what MUSIC should be.

You think their recorded stuff is crazy? I’ve never been to a live show of these guys, unfortunately, but… If you read about Butthole Surfers, they were known for crazy shows: Gibby Haynes might have started shows with clothes on, but he might not have ended them that way. The Cramps, likewise, were insane live performers.

Notwithstanding how weird they are, both bands achieved some amount of acceptance in the mainstream, too. Butthole Surfers got serious radio play with their 1996 album Electriclarryland. And The Cramps were featured as Wednesday’s big dance with Goo Goo Muck – about 40 years after it was originally recorded! 40 years!

Incidentally, did you know that it took mainstream America about 40 years to figure out that hummus is a delicious foodstuff? Seriously. I’m not kidding.

Huh, that gets me thinking… I mean, what if all of the songs on this list were songs about hummus?

In any case, all of these songs are, most of all, fun. If you make it through the end of this list, I guarantee you that you’ll be smiling, and you’ll also feel a bit more free to be you, whoever you are. I mean, we’re all weird, but these songs?

These songs are the epitomy of Weird with a capital “W”. And that’s a really, really, really good thing.
