The proper name of this album is Aborted Towns, The Deadly Silence Before Utopia. If you think the album cover and album name portend something kinda creepy, you’d be right.
For starters, I was poking through the electronic vinyl rack at Princeton Record Exchange the other day, and I stumbled across this record. Like the good ol’ days, I looked at the album cover and thought, “Well, this looks weird and interesting. I guess I’ll give it a try.”
As it turns out, Sigillum S is an Italian industrial / electronic / experimental group that’s been around since 1985. In the 40 years that they’ve been doing their thing, I’ve never heard these guys before, and I think this record has inspired me to go digging further. This album listens like a story, fractured and fragmented for sure, which I think was their intent.
Correction: It’s more like a horror movie. Sorta. It’s tense. It’s rhythmic. It’s experimental. And, on the fifth track (Buckshot Memories), did they have one of their children — or perhaps more aptly, grandchildren — read a story like that for the record? I hope they just paid for someone else’s kid to read that. Kinda reminds me of a horror-show version of Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward.
