Deftones – My Mind is a Mountain

Don’t you love subgenres? The tracks on this week’s Song of the Week have been described as metal, heavy metal, progressive metal, punk metal, alternative rock, alternative metal, experimental rock, post-metal, post-rock, pop/rock, rap, and nu metal.

Whatever. These songs are loud, dirty, screechy, heavy, rhythmic, mean, nasty, whiny, and, above all else — really fun. I have a new subgenre: Angry Fun!

Back in 2016, my then 18 year-old son Alex and I were heading to a Black Sabbath concert together, and we listened to Deftone’s album Around the Fur on the way to the concert. I mean, I really, really like Around the Fur, but, like many bands, I really can’t name any songs. It’s not that I don’t like their music, but the song names just don’t hit me. Will I remember the name of this song, “my mind is a mountain?” Probably not. But that’s not because the song isn’t great. It’s just that my brain doesn’t quite work that way. I mean, I remember a few of Black Sabbath’s song names, Iron Man, Black Sabbath, Electric Funeral, but… then it starts to get fuzzy. Anyway, I think that the Black Sabbath concert was one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended, maybe even the best. But Ozzy, Tony, and Geezer just stood there. Why was it so amazing? I don’t know. Maybe it was black magic!

And, I find it funny that I so distinctly recall listening to Deftones that day. So, here we are, in 2026, and Deftones released a new album last August, and it’s not just good. It might be great.

And what about The Mars Volta: “Let the wheels burn / Let the wheels burn / Stack the tires to the neck / With the body inside”. And Tool. And Sleep Token. And SueCo? Yeah, SueCo. Doesn’t matter, all great tunes for some angry summering.

Track List

Deftones – my mind is a mountain
The Mars Volta – Teflon
TOOL – The Pot
Sleep Token – The Summoning
SueCo – ENEMY (with blackbear)
