Mannequin Pussy has been around since 2010, so they’re not new, but they’re also NOT a golden oldie. Their sound is super fresh, super kick-ass, and super, um, awesome. They play what they want when they want, and while they’re labeled, probably appropriately, as punk and indie rock, I feel like they deserve no label.
They’re just really, really good.
So, anyway, I started thinking… Pit their entire I Got Heaven album, track by track, against other kick-ass women-fronted bands and see how things shake out. What happens is pretty magical.
So, kids, what’s on this list, and where did it come from?
I mean, Mannequin Pussy, of course, right in my backyard, from Philly. Knifeplay is another treasure of a find from Philly. Two bands from Philly! Woohoo! I’m not from Philly, but with this kind of music coming from that town, I might be moving there soon.
California boasts Best Coast, Cherry Glazerr, Dum Dum Girls, The Distillers, and Destroy Boys. And while Winter is technically from New York nowadays, she came to New York from California.
Wet Leg is from the Isle of Wight in England. We’ve got Amyl and the Sniffers from Australia, and last, but not least is Ida Maria from Norway. Norway!
Three continents!
