Did I mention that spring is a time for angry music? I did. But angry music melted into silly music that morphed back into ridiculously angry music.

You know what I’m talking about: Post-punk and pre-grunge, and Fred Schneider went into the future in 1979 with his post-punk B-52’s. 1979 was a massive year for punk: Joy Division with Unknown Pleasures, The Clash with London Calling, The Damned with Machine Gun Etiquette, and The Germs, Buzzcocks, and many, many more. And Henry Rollins hadn’t even joined Black Flag yet. That would be two years later with Damaged.
Then, in 1996, Fred Schneider went back in time with his pre-grunge masterpiece Coconut. Nirvana had already burned out, and grunge was fast becoming good old-fashioned rock-and-roll by 1996, but there he was predicting grunge in the past with Just Fred.
And so. An homage to the best pre-grunge and post-punk music. There is so much more, but who can’t love Fred Schneider, Pixies, Violent Femmes, Camper Van Beethoven, The Dead Milkmen, Descendents (OK, they’re punk), They Might Be Giants, King Missile (I know, they’re a stretch), and The B-52’s?
I can only love them: Some seriously happy angry music for the end of May.
