A long time ago, in a lifetime far away, I was in 5th grade. My school was in the habit of inviting some of the kids to help do the morning announcements. Kids would bring their favorite song on a tape recorder, play 5 or 10 seconds of it, maybe more, and then…. I don’t know. I can’t remember.
All I know is that I got invited! I went home, got out my trusty tape recorder, and I recorded my favorite song off the radio. The next day, I proudly marched into the principal’s office to do the morning announcements, placed my tape recorder on the desk, and played… Bette Midler’s The Rose over the intercom.
A fifth grade boy in approximately 1982 was not supposed to be proudly listening to Bette Midler. I got laughed out of class. I got laughed out of fifth grade.
Oddly, this was a defining moment where I realized (1) I love sharing music with people, (2) I didn’t really care if people laughed at me, and (3) as a late entry corollary, I love to make mixtapes and… in 2026, playlists.
I mean, it hurt my 5th grade feelings a LOT to be mocked by my classmates, but at the end of the day, I was proud that I had shared a piece of music that meant something to me.
Fast forward to now. I am much, much older, but I am still addicted to making playlists and sharing my favorite jams with anyone who is willing to listen.
Some have suggested to me that my brain is kinda scary. Maybe, but mostly, it’s just filled with songs, some sad, some happy, some angry, some joyful, and some just plain old weird.
I hope that if you stumble across this website, you’ll have a little bit of fun exploring. Who knows? You might discover some music you didn’t know you liked. And then, you might be inspired to share some of your favorite tunes, too!
