Bauhaus is one of the most influential bands of all time for me. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” is a positively genius piece of music, and when I heard it for the first time, it may have actually rewired my brain. According to Wikipedia (and I believe EVERYTHING that’s there!):
“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” was recorded live in the studio in a single take during a six-hour session at Beck Studios in Wellingborough on 26 January 1979. It was the first work they recorded together, six weeks after the band had formed.
Genius doesn’t always have to marinate for years. Sometimes, it’s born in a heartbeat. And, probably even more influential was their album The Sky’s Gone Out. Bauhaus. Founders of goth. Bringing darkness and glam together. Forever. Genius.
“All we ever wanted was everything / All we ever got was cold / Get up, eat jelly / Sandwich bars, and barbed wire / Squash every week into a day”. I mean, who doesn’t want to hear a song like that? By the way, those are lyrics from “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything” on The Sky’s Gone Out. That song isn’t featured on this list, but, hey, whatever. You’ve got Apple Music, or Spotify, or Qobuz, or whatever. Go listen to it yourself!
This list is more or less a tribute to Bauhaus and their spin-offs Love and Rockets and, of course, Peter Murphy.
But no goth list can be put together without The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, and Siouxsie & The Banshees. I feel like I shoulda’ put Christian Death on here, too, but I think they’re not for *this* list. They’re coming. Oh, baby, they’re coming!
Apparently, The Cure toured with Siouxsie way back in 1979 (1979!!!!), and they were Siouxsie’s opener. There was some kind of fight in Siouxsie’s band, and The Cure’s Robert Smith stood in during the tour. He was also invited to join them permanently. He joined them for two years from 1982-84, but he didn’t stay. Good. ‘Cause The Cure did some amazing work after Faith.
And The Sisters of Mercy are just bad-ass. Period. I wanna wear black, ride a motorcycle without a helmet, drink cheap red wine from a solo cup, all while sitting behind jet black sunglasses. No, you’re not allowed to know what I’m thinking, let alone looking at!
