DJ KRUSH – NERVEGRID

[Playlist] | [?]

DJ KRUSH has been creating dark and atmospheric hip-hop / trip-hop for well over 30 years. He is a true master of his art, and his latest album, TOKYØHUM, is no exception.

You should listen to the entire album from start to finish in one sitting. The whole thing presents an unsettling feeling, but it is also amazingly engaging and beautiful. It is available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify, but not on Qobuz. Go figure. DJ KRUSH’s website shows all the places you can download or stream it.

As I put together this playlist, I felt like the tunes I was selecting were narrating a brief moment of some guy, living in a big city, feeling alone, but not alone. Like my last song of the week, here I lay my scene…. Oh, WAIT, using AI to create pictures is super fun!

He is in his third floor walk up apartment. Standing alone. He looks out his window over the dirty streets. Waves of nausea hit him, not in his gut, but a punch to his face.

If he had the energy to puke, maybe he would.  But instead, he stares.  The cars. The people. The insanity. He looks at nothing.

He descends the stairs to the street.

Outside, it seems that he stands still, and the streets, the storefronts, and the people all pass him by.  Anonymous neighbors walking their dogs. A deli. A donut shop. Another deli. “Ha,” he might think to himself. “Triple D”. But, he doesn’t notice a thing. He’s inside himself.

The streets carry him to a small bridge that crosses a small river. There, he stops. Stands. Grips the handrails. Considers all he’s lost. All that might have been and wasn’t. All that he wanted and vanished. All of it. Alone. Tension rises, and he grips the handrails even more tightly.

His phone rings. His buddy is hungry, and asks if he wants to hang and get some food. Yeah, that sounds nice. Together, they eat and consume multiple beers. The night begins.

that’s weird, i see frolicking dolphins when i listen, tail-slapping, blowing bubbles, eating menhaden . . . that kind of stuff.

on a more serious note, you need to put those crazy numbers that indicate the date AFTER the title of the playlist . . . as that makes the sorting a mess in spotify.

I guess it all depends on how you sort your lists! I kinda remember WHEN I was listening to something, so the date first helps me!
