Amigo the Devil – New Kind of Lonely

A New Kind of Lonely dropped as my family and I were preparing for my mother’s memorial service. She passed away in November, and I discovered this piece of sadness in late December.

Let’s be clear, Amigo the Devil did not speak to me about Mom’s passing. He just amplified my sadness, and that felt good.

I mean, it’s kinda weird to go from, “My mom passed away” to “Wow, Murder Folk,” but there it is. My crazy brain takes me to some pretty weird places.

Amigo the Devil may be an odd friend for sad times, but this song is freakin’ amazing, veering away from serial killers into something very special.

And he makes me think of his father, and his father before him. Yeah, you know who I’m talking about! Nick Cave, Tom Waits, David Bowie, David Byrne with the Talking Heads. He’s building on a legacy of greatness.
